Webinar: Oral Health in Cancer

The Seminar is addressed to health professionals, who are an integral part of the interdisciplinary approach to cancer. The 5 topics presented belong to the great chapter of Cancer: Prevention, Early diagnosis, Treatment, Care during treatment and after.

The first talk is dedicated to the early signs of oral cancer.

Oral cancer during the first 4-8 months does not hurt, so the patient delays visiting the doctor! It is estimated that in 60% of patients the diagnosis is delayed from 6 months to 2 years. Two-thirds of these cases will recur and require ongoing treatment and care, exhausting patients and their families, but also placing a significant burden on the healthcare system. It is necessary to inform health care professionals, members of the interdisciplinary approach, in order to contribute to early diagnosis.

The next presentation concerns the new therapeutic approaches and developments in the treatment of cancer, such as the combinations of cytotoxic chemotherapy with the specific targeting of monoclonal antibodies. These drugs are targeted therapies, designed to increase efficacy and reduce toxicity. However, systemic and oral toxicities can limit the benefit of these new therapeutic agents.

Oral toxicities are included in the following discussion, since the mouth is a central target of oncological treatments.

The next talk will refer to people taking bone protection drugs and the prevention of osteonecrosis of the jaw and will present the value of oral health in preventing the complication. Today we know that "a clean and healthy mouth can prevent and/or reduce the toxicities of cancer treatments."

The Seminar will conclude with the Myths and Truths about smoking.
