Presentation at the Postgraduate Program of the Department of Nursing, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) Events, Seminars, & Publications 25. 11. 2025 Nursing Care Systems – Supportive Care, Postgraduate Program: “Specialized Supportive Care and Advanced Oncology Nursing”.Department of Nursing, School of Health Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor: Dr. Elisavet PatirakiWe warmly thank Professor Patiraki for the kind invitation to present on the topic:“Prevention and Management of Oral Cavity Problems in Patients Undergoing Antineoplastic Therapy.”In other words — to demonstrate how the mouth is the invisible regulator of therapy! Our presentation began with a brief overview of how early recognition of oral symptoms can lead to faster diagnosis and more successful treatment. We then discussed the toxicities of antineoplastic therapy and the ways in which they can be prevented or minimized. As numerous studies have shown, “a clean and healthy mouth can prevent or reduce the toxicities of oncologic therapy.”Caries, mucositis, infections, pain, xerostomia, trismus, and other related complications can be effectively prevented and managed. The role of the specialized nurse is vital — before, during, and after therapy — contributing significantly to comprehensive care and patient quality of life. The nurse provides essential oral care guidance, reminds patients what to look for, and helps them recognize symptoms early so they can seek the appropriate dental or clinical specialist in time.We warmly congratulate Professor Patiraki, her dedicated colleagues, and the outstanding postgraduate students of the Program for their excellent work and their strong spirit of teamwork and collaboration.
