Mucormycosis in Greece Events, Seminars, & Publications 03. 05. 2023 Mucormycoses are a group of fungal infections that have appeared in the last 2 decades. According to a recent study, published in the Journal of Fungi, March 29, 2023, M. Drogari-Apiranthitou et al, Epidemiology of Mucormycosis in Greece; Results from a Nationwide Prospective Survey and Published Case Reports. Ιn Greece 108 cases were recorded between 2005 – 2022, in the context of the national, multicenter study. Mucormycoses are fungal infections, which mainly affect immunocompromised patients, most often with hematological neoplasia, transplant recipients, people with diabetes mellitus, and other immunodeficiencies. The most common forms and places affected are the nose and brain area, the skin and the lungs. Rarely, it may appear in the mouth, hard palate, as it was reported in our publication: Nicolatou-Galitis et al, Mucormycosis presenting with dental pain and palatal ulcer in a patient with chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia: case report and literature review. JMM Case Reports, 2015. A rate of up to 22% of mucormycoses, in Greece, was observed in otherwise healthy individuals, mainly on the skin in traumatized areas after a motorcycle accident or in a surgical wound. Early diagnosis is of great value because it will lead to timely and effective treatment.
