A black spot or plaque in the mouth or on the skin, could it be melanoma? Oral health 14. 06. 2023 Melanoma in the mouth is rare. When it is present, it is found, more often, on the palate and the gums of the upper jaw, in places that are not "seen" by the sun, as it is in the case of melanoma on the skin. Oral melanoma has no symptoms in the early stages and is not obvious as long as it is inside the mouth. The main risk factor for oral melanoma appears to be smoking, while dentures that do not fit well and the microbial load of the mouth may also contribute. The sun cannot affect oral melanoma. Early diagnosis is the key, aiming to early and effective treatment. Symptoms of melanoma in the mouth are pain, bleeding, ulceration, a loose tooth. The color of the lesion is black, red or even white. For its timely diagnosis, a visit to the Dentist is necessary, as well as a high index of awareness from the dentist who will see us. Several benign tumors and reactive growths in the mouth may resemble a melanoma lesion, such as granuloma, hemangioma, and other reactive growths. Also, dark spots and deep-colored areas, due to deposits of exogenous pigment, such as amalgam fillings or amalgam tattoos, can resemble dark spots and moles. The properly trained dentist will help us and offer us the correct diagnosis. The dermatologist will evaluate the black spots on the skin and help us in the proper diagnosis. The dermatologist will also give us the most appropriate protection advice aimed at preventing and reducing the risk of skin melanoma. Tags: melanoma , timely diagnosis , oral health , smoking
